Airy and contemporary, Georgette is one of the most popular fabrics in Indian ethnic fashion in the current day. Irrespective of whether the item is a georgette saree, a georgette salwar kameez piece, a georgette lehenga choli set or simply a kurta, this fabric has become synonymous with high aesthetic value. It has two major characteristics i.e. it is crinkled and is generally sheer or translucent in appearance.

The inspiration for the creation of georgette is believed to have come from the creation of chiffon. After the creation of the latter, there was a need for a similar looking fabric which would be more durable and strong.

Essentially, there are two major types of georgette fabrics i.e. pure georgette and faux georgette. While the pure variety is made from natural silk, the faux variety is manufactured using either Rayon or Polyester or a blend of both. The weaving technique of georgette is similar to that of crepe, however, it is the twisting of the yarns during the process of weaving that makes the difference. Within pure and faux georgette itself there are many other subtypes, the most famous and most often used ones of which are Satin Georgette fabric, Viscose Georgette fabric, Silk Georgette fabric, Jacquard Georgette fabric, Nylon Georgette fabric and Polyester Georgette fabric. Types of georgette can also be segregated on the basis of their opacity. Both translucent and opaque varieties of the fabric are equally popular in the country.

Red and Off White Net Double Layered Lehenga CholiGeorgette has also been used for layering within a garment, as it is lightweight and the translucent varieties are extremely useful in playing up the visual appeal of the garment. In layered lehengas for instance, the innermost layers tend to be made from heavier fabrics like velvet or silk, whereas lighter, sheer materials like georgette are used for the outer layers.
